Rui Poças

Rui Poças, (born December, 4, 1966), is a Portuguese award winning Cinematographer who earned an international reputation for his breathtaking images and fluid storytelling in a versatile range of genres.

He recently shot the feature films Gran Tour by Miguel Gomes, O Corno by Jaione Camborda, To Be Loved by Whom by Emily Barbelin, A Little Love Package by Gaston Solnicki, Alma Viva by Cristele Alves Meira, Fogo-fátuo by João Pedro Rodrigues, Bodyhackers by Carlos Conceição, Onde Fica Esta Rua? By João Pedro Rodrigues and João Rui Guerra da Mata, Amadeo by Vicente Alves do Ó, Tinnitus by Gregorio Graziosi, Enterre Seus Mortos by Marco Dutra, O Clube dos Anjos by Angelo Defanti, some of them awarded on several film festivals including Best Cinematography Awards.

In his recent credits is also Ira Sachs´s Frankie, staring Isabelle Huppert, Greg Kinnear, Marisa Tomei and Jérémie Renier, presented at Cannes Official Competition.

Poças also shot Our Beloved Month of August, and Tabu, both directed by Miguel Gomes, the latter having premiered at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Alfred Bauer Award and the International Federation of Film Critics prizes.

Tabu is the Portuguese film with the widest international distribution as of 2012 and the fifth from Portugal to be commercially released in New York (Film Forum, December 2012), after O Fantasma by João Pedro Rodrigues (2003, IFC Center).

He is a regular collaborator of the Portuguese filmmaker João Pedro Rodrigues with whom he worked on O Fantasma, To Die Like a Man, and The Ornithologist, among others.

The Ornithologist premiered in Locarno Film Festival being nominated for Best Film and winning best director.

His work is allied to a diversification by the cinema of Latin America and Europe.

Shot in 2013, the film about the poet, writer and playwright Hilda Hilst, directed by Gabriela Greeb, and the Writer-Directors Juliana Rojas and Marco Dutra´s film The Good Manners which premiered in Locarno and won the 2017 Locarno´s special jury Award, and a nomination for the 2018 Fenix film Awards.

ZAMA, Lucrecia´s Martel latest film, based on the 1956 novel of the same name by Antonio di Benedetto, premiered at the 74th Venice International Film Festival, bringing Poças a nomination and awarding him as a runner-up for the International Cinephile Society awards, amongst names as Afonso Cuarón (ROMA) and Lukasz Zal (COLD WAR).

The Argentine Academy of Cinematography Arts and Sciences chose the film as the national entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards and Best Iberoamerican Film at the 32nd Goya Awards.

ZAMA was nominated for 56 awards, giving Poças the win for best cinematography in the Fenix Film Awards and the same Best Cinematography prize at Platino Awards for Iberoamerican cinema.

Rui Poças is a regular Torino FeatureLab Trainer on Cinematography and an occasional collaborator in institutions such as Harvard University, Superior School for Theatre and Cinema of Lisbon, Universidade Católica do Porto, HEAD - Haute École d’Art et de Design de Genève, Calouste Gulbenkian Institute, London Film School, Berlinale Talents or Hochschule Karlsruhe - Technik und Wirtschaft.
